Speakers and topics covered will include:

• The Head of the Shorts Innovation Taxes Group (ITG) , Scott Burkinshaw will explain how to claim Research and Development (R&D) and Patent Box tax reliefs to generate tax repayments for both profitable and loss making businesses. Any company paying people to resolve technical problems could claim.

A Chartered Tax Adviser, Scott focuses on providing progressive corporate and personal tax advice. By understanding the objectives of businesses and their owners, Scott is able to draw on his extensive experience to advise on the most tax efficient ways to achieve their short and long term aims.

Prior to joining Shorts, Scott was RSM Tenon’s head of Corporate Tax for Yorkshire, and was a member of their Research and Development tax relief and international tax teams. He also has significant experience of advising on business disposals and acquisitions.

• Rosie Hardy, Senior Patent Attorney at Withers & Rogers will dispel some myths about applying for patents, giving an overview of the application process as well as explaining the many benefits of obtaining a patent.

Rosie is a European and UK Patent Attorney at Withers & Rogers LLP. As a member of the Engineering team, her practice spans the fields of physics, engineering and electronics. Within these fields, she  has expertise securing patent protection for electromechanical devices, clean technology, power generation, automotive and rail parts, oil and gas exploration, medical apparatus and consumer products.

In addition to drafting and prosecuting patent applications, Rosie specialises in strategically managing and enforcing patent rights for clients, as well as opposing and avoiding infringement of third party patent rights. Rosie works with a range of clients including multi-national corporations, SMEs, universities and overseas clients. She enjoys working closely with a number of companies to help them develop effective intellectual property portfolios, blending her technical expertise and commercial savvy.

• Natwest’s UK Technology Sector Leader, Roland Emmans, will explain their varied approach to supporting technology businesses of all sizes – this will include details of some less traditional methods of support which offer a broader range of options than you might perceive.

Roland loves translating what Tech & Telco firms do into a language bankers can understand. His mission is to get under the skin of as many tech businesses as possible and help them to develop by opening doors for them. These doors may be to new contacts, new ideas, new finance solutions or lending money to help them deliver growth opportunities.

Today, he is RBS’ UK Technology Sector Leader, focusing on supporting the banking needs of mid and large sized firms within the Technology & Telecoms sectors across the country. Prior to his current role, for four years he led RBS’ South Technology Team, heading a team supporting around 150 technology clients across the Thames Valley and wider South of England. He previously worked in the City of London for 14 years mainly working on European Leverage finance transactions.

• David Grimes, Head of Sheffield City Region Growth Hub will focus on business support available to businesses across the Sheffield City Region including support for innovation including grants and advice from specialist advisors.
