Additional support for businesses in the Retail, Leisure and Hospitality sectors has been announced as new national restrictions are introduced, with local authorities responsible for paying out the grants.

Which businesses are eligible?

Support will be available to businesses that operate in the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure sectors which pay business rates on the property they occupy.

Guidance on the sector that specific businesses are categorised as can be found here on the government website

Businesses likely to be eligible for support include:

  • Shops (other than those selling ‘essential’ items and permitted to remain open throughout the restrictions
  • Hairdressers and beauty salons
  • Pubs, bars, cafes, and restaurants (likely to include those forced to close but still able to provide delivery or take-away services)

What Support Grants will be available?

The one-off support grants are worth up to £9,000, depending on the rateable value of the business premises. This will be allocated as follows:

Rateable value of the business property  Grant available (one-off)
less than £15,000 £4,000
over £15,000 and less than £51,000  £6,000
£51,000 or over  £9,000

Businesses are eligible for one grant per property that is subject to business rates.
Additional funding is likely to be available for businesses that do not pay business rates on their properties. This will be determined by Local Authorities in due course.

How and where to apply for the new support grants

Businesses will be able to apply through their local council website (when details are released). We advise businesses to regularly check these sites for details on how to apply upon that information being released:

  • Sheffield City Council -
  • Barnsley
  • Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council
  • Doncaster Council
  • Chesterfield Borough Council

It is our understanding that for businesses which have previously applied for and received grant payments under the previous restrictions, a payment may be automatically made to the business. We advise businesses to check with the above Local Authorities regularly for updates.

These one-off grants are in addition to earlier grants of up to £3,000 and up to £2,100 for businesses forced to close due to prior restrictions, or those that remained open but were adversely impacted.
