On 8 April 2025, a new portal was launched to verify the identity of directors and persons with significant control (PSC) at Companies House. This new requirement will have far-reaching implications for directors across the UK.

This ID verification process will become a legal requirement from autumn 2025 (exact date not yet confirmed). However, we recommend you act on this new requirement promptly to avoid delays.

What are the changes coming to verification ID requirements with Companies House?

ID checks are being enacted to reduce the risk of fraud and improve the transparency and accuracy of information on the Companies House register. This is part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 (ECCTA).

Companies House requires anyone setting up, running, controlling or owning a company, limited liability partnership, or limited partnership in the UK to complete an identity verification (IDV). In essence, you must prove your identity, regardless of your nationality or where you are resident.

Who needs to verify their ID with Companies House?

The IDV requirements state a director or person with significant control, or anyone acting on behalf of entities, must complete this ID check.

Is there a deadline for when the ID verification requirements come into effect?

Voluntary verification began on 8 April. At the time of writing, mandatory verification of ID checks will be a legal requirement by autumn 2025 for all directors and PSCs on incorporation and appointment.

There will be a 12-month transition period to help current directors and PSCs complete the checks. They will have one year to comply with the new requirements and have their identities verified by autumn 2026.

How will Companies House verify my ID?

There are three methods you can use to complete the IDV requirements:

  • Online using GOV.UK One Login
  • In person at a post office
  • Using an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) to verify your identity on your behalf

What information will I need to submit?

You will need one type of photo ID (the options include a biometric passport or UK driving licence).

If you complete the ID check online, you will also have to answer security questions about your personal financial setup, such as any credit cards, mortgages, or even mobile phone contracts you have.

The post office must have “in-branch verification services” to carry out the ID check. They will scan your photo ID and take a photo of you.

What happens if I don’t complete this ID check?

If you do not verify your identity in time, you will not be able to:

  • Make any new filings (including confirmation statements)
  • Start a new company
  • Be appointed as a new director or PSC

If a director continues to act after this becomes a legal requirement, they could be disqualified.

Once verified you will receive a unique identifier, which will be required to update other filings on Companies House.
