We were very saddened to hear last month of the death of former Shorts colleague Ady Howard.

Ady was a familiar face at Shorts for almost four decades, having joined the firm in 1974 and remaining with us until his retirement in 2013. A Senior Audit Manager, he was a well-known and respected member of the team who worked with businesses of all shapes and sizes during his many years with the firm. Many of the clients he looked after had worked with Ady for several decades.

His connection to the local area extended beyond his working life. Before joining Shorts, Ady began his accountancy career in Chesterfield and Sheffield and was also a semi-professional footballer, playing for Matlock Town in the Northern Premier League. Outside work, he had a longstanding interest in crown green bowls and represented North Derbyshire Parks.

When Ady retired after a 49-year career in accountancy, the announcement marking his retirement remembered him fondly, describing him as a “well-known and respected personality” whose presence would be missed by colleagues and clients alike.

Those words feel particularly poignant now.

Many of our longer-standing clients, as well as current and former members of the Shorts team, will remember Ady from his many years with the firm. We were very sorry to hear the news of his passing and send our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Ady will be remembered with great fondness by all those at Shorts who knew and worked with him.
