Celebrating 25 Years with Chris Allen

On 29 October, we're proud to celebrate an exceptional milestone as Chris Allen marks 25 years with Shorts.

A quarter of a century is an incredible achievement, and Chris's contribution to the firm reaches far beyond the length of his service. Throughout those 25 years, he has played a central role in shaping the technology, systems and digital infrastructure that support our colleagues, clients and business today.

Chris joined Shorts at a time when technology looked very different. Since then, the pace of change has been relentless, with advances in software, cloud technology, digital working, cybersecurity and communication transforming the way professional services firms operate. Through every stage of that evolution, Chris has helped ensure Shorts not only kept pace with change but embraced it.

His own journey reflects that growth. Over the years, Chris has progressed to become our Digital Director, developing his role alongside the increasing importance of technology within the firm. His leadership, expertise and vision have helped create the strong foundations on which so much of our day-to-day work now relies.

Perhaps nowhere is that more evident than in the Digital team itself.

What is now a highly skilled five-person team supporting both our Chesterfield and Sheffield offices had much more modest beginnings. Colleagues who have been around long enough may remember that the team originally operated from a small cupboard-like room behind the ladies' loo in the Chesterfield office. From those humble beginnings, Chris has helped build and develop the modern Digital team we know today.

Reflecting on that journey, Chris says:

"I'm tremendously proud of all of the environments that I've built at Shorts, all of the infrastructure and the networking. But what I'm more proud of than anything is the fact that I've been able to build a team where I've given opportunities to people right at the start of their careers and watched them grow and develop the Shorts values that are so important to me."

While much of their work takes place behind the scenes, the impact of that team can be seen across every department. Whether implementing new solutions, supporting colleagues, maintaining critical systems or helping protect the firm from ever-evolving digital threats, the Digital team provides the reliability and expertise that enables everyone else to do their jobs effectively.

Many of us only truly appreciate the importance of technology when something stops working. The reality is that so much works because of the effort, planning and expertise that Chris and his team provide every day. The support they offer touches every area of the business, often without seeking recognition for it.

As we celebrate Chris's 25-year anniversary, it's an opportunity to acknowledge not only his dedication and professional achievements, but also the lasting impact he has had on the firm. The Digital team that supports us today stands as a testament to the vision, commitment and leadership he has demonstrated throughout his career with Shorts.

Chris's own progression to Digital Director mirrors the evolution of the function itself. While technology has changed dramatically over the last 25 years, his focus has remained remarkably consistent: building something that lasts, developing people and helping ensure Shorts is well positioned for the future. As Chris puts it:

"I really like the idea that I've been able to play my part in ensuring that continuity continues and that it will continue into the future."
