This week, Shorts were kindly invited to the annual Keebles & St Luke’s mixed five-a-Side football tournament. Keebles hosted the event with all proceeds going to support St Luke’s Hospice

Shorts entered a team of 8 keen footballers with 11 other companies from the Sheffield City Region entering their best budding footballers in attempt to win the coveted trophy.

The early stages

Shorts began their journey in a group of 3 rather than 4 due an entrant pulling out at the last minute. Our first game was against CPP and despite Shorts going 1-0 down in the early stages, the game was turned on its head following a tremendous solo effort from Bobby Thompson and a rocket from Connor Smith.

In the second group stage, Shorts were up against fellow accountants Brierley and Co and came up with a convincing 5-0 victory. Due to the absence of a team in our group, we were through to the knockout stages.

Crisis struck shortly after when one of Shorts’ players, Martin Dean, had to leave due to illness and we were suddenly down a man. The difficult then became ‘taxing’.

Shorts then beat surveyors Inform in the quarter finals and then played fellow accountants Hart Shaw in the semi-finals. The warm conditions were evidentially getting to the players in a well contested 0-0 draw which resulted in a penalty shoot-out. Following a string of fine penalties from the Shorts players, Chris Nocerino pulled off a brilliant save to put Shorts into the final.

Through to the final

Shorts then faced yet another local accountants,  Hawsons in the final. Although both teams were clearly fatigued by this point, Shorts came out victors in a emphatic 4-0 victory. The trophy was ours.
