Malcolm Pope and five members of our Genus team are in London this week at Xerocon 2019.  Following his blog with details of the first morning's events, Malcolm now details the afternoon's events.

Xerocon 2019 - Day 1 Afternoon

The afternoon followed a different format from the morning’s key note talks. Instead, this offered the opportunity to spend time with the 70+ app providers and attend a variety of more specific talks.

Although the team attended a variety of different talks to ensure we could take it the breath of what Xerocon could offer, my afternoon consisted of talks on cash flow prediction automation, a review of solutions for the construction sector (as I have a number of clients in this sector and now including the introduction of CIS verification) and a review of both the apps we use currently as well as any new entrants to the market. There appears a consensus that as Xero and the supporting apps mature, it can replace an increasing number of historical accounting solutions (normally at a fraction of the cost).

In addition to this, I was invited to join a panel on strategy for accounting firms given the challenges and opportunities we are presented with. It was a good opportunity for me to answer a lot of questions similar to those I’ll ask my clients, especially those in professional/creative industries. Essentially, concentrating on the ‘what, so what, now what’ from before and a great opportunity to compare notes with other firms.

The final keynote talks were centred around the increase in fintech (the technology associated with finance). Again, significant opportunities exist around the increased access to capital for businesses and the traditional methods of funding may no longer be the most beneficial. Our friends at NatWest seem to have a number of innovations worth further review and this will be on the agenda for tomorrow.

The evening ended with the traditional Xerocon Party. This was a great way to end the day but with street food, dodgems , a helter skelter and live music from my university days, what’s not to enjoy??
